Bernese Mountain

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large, strongly built breed from Switzerland, specifically the Swiss Alps. It is also known as the Berner Senenhund, Bernese Cattle Dog, or Bouvier Bernois. The breed was originally kept as a general farm dog and used as a large Sennenhunde carts -pulling animal. The breed was officially established in 1912 and The American Kennel Club first recognized the Bernese Mountain Dog in 1937.

The dog was commonly used as a farm dog, and used to guard the owner’s property and dairy cattle over long distances in alpine pastures. Farmers used this dogs to help transport their carts of milk and cheese. Locally, this breed was often referred to as the “cheese dog.
